The short version
Across those 85 models, the lowest price we track for each runs from $3,990 to $45,299. The median is $6,899 and the average is $8,924. Most models sit below the average: 12 cost under $5,000, 52 cost $5,000 to $7,999, 14 cost $8,000 to $15,000 and 7 cost more than $15,000. The few expensive models pull the average up, which is why the median is the better number to plan around.
Where a model is sold by more than one shop, we use the lowest price. These are kit prices, so they leave out the items in the last section.
Price by shape
| Shape | Models | Cheapest | Median | Most expensive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Barrel | 37 | $4,037 | $6,191 | $8,499 |
| Cabin | 22 | $4,890 | $7,072.50 | $43,990 |
| Cube | 6 | $3,990 | $6,510.50 | $10,990 |
| Pod | 3 | $5,926 | $6,045 | $6,990 |
The cheapest barrel is the Almost Heaven Salem 2 Person Barrel at $4,037, and the most expensive is the Redwood Outdoors Extra-Wide Barrel with Porch (6 seats) at $8,499. Among cabins, the SunRay Seneca (3 seats) is the cheapest at $4,890. The Auroom Arti, a 5-seat pre-assembled cabin at $43,990, is the most expensive model of any shape that records one; only the Sun Home Solaris 6 at $45,299, which has no shape in our data, costs more. The cheapest cube, and the cheapest model overall, is the SaunaLife CL3G 2-Person Cube at $3,990. The most expensive cube is the SaunaLife CL12GCP, an 8-seat model with a changeroom, at $10,990. The three pods run from the Dundalk MiniPOD at $5,926 to the SaunaLife G3 at $6,990.
Barrels are the biggest group and their prices are tightly bunched. Cabins show the widest spread because the group includes that one $43,990 model; the cabin median of $7,072.50 is $881.50 above the barrel median. The other 17 models have no shape recorded, so the table leaves them out.
Price by seats
| Seats | Models | Price range | Median price | Median price per seat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | $5,545 | $5,545 | $5,545 |
| 2 | 12 | $3,990 to $10,550 | $4,994.50 | $2,497 |
| 3 | 8 | $4,390 to $7,399 | $5,290 | $1,763 |
| 4 | 27 | $4,665 to $36,299 | $5,990 | $1,498 |
| 5 | 4 | $6,483 to $43,990 | $11,724.50 | $2,345 |
| 6 | 25 | $5,299 to $45,299 | $7,799 | $1,300 |
| 8 | 8 | $6,358 to $14,990 | $9,099 | $1,137 |
Cost per seat mostly falls as the kit gets bigger. The median kit for two people costs $2,497 per seat, while the median 8-seat kit costs $1,137. The 5-seat row is the exception, because only four models seat five and two of them are the $15,450 Peak Kilimanjaro and the $43,990 Auroom Arti. Across all 85 models the median is $1,532 per seat. If you will only use the sauna with one or two other people, a 4-seat kit at a median $5,990 is usually the better value than a 2-seat kit at $4,994.50, because the total difference is about $1,000 for twice the seats. Seat counts are the maker's, so check the outside dimensions on the model page too.
Kit or assembled
Of the 85 models, 74 are listed as DIY kits and 5 as pre-assembled; the other 6 do not say. DIY kits range from $3,990 to $16,100 with a median of $6,420.50. The five pre-assembled models run from $26,495 (Sweat Kingdom The Outpost) to $45,299 (Sun Home Solaris 6), with a median of $36,299. The gap is large enough that pre-assembled and kit prices should not be compared directly.
Electric heaters
Of the 85, 68 list an electric heater, and their median price is $6,328.50. Three list an infrared heater, the Peak Saunas cabins, with a median of $15,450. The other 14 have no heater type stated in our data, so we make no statement about their heater costs. For how electric and wood-burning heaters differ in running needs, see the electric vs wood-burning heaters guide.
What else to budget for
The kit price is not the project price. We have no sourced dollar figure for these, so get local quotes:
- Foundation. A kit needs a level, solid base such as a gravel pad, pavers or a concrete slab, and the right choice depends on the model's weight and your soil.
- Electrical. An electric heater usually needs its own dedicated circuit run by an electrician, sometimes with a new breaker or a trench to the sauna.
- Delivery. Large kits are heavy, so ask each shop what delivery costs to your address and who unloads it.
- Permits and inspections, which vary by town.
- Extras: a thermometer, benches or backrests if not included, stones, and a cover or sealant for the wood.
The foundation and electrical guide goes through what each item involves and what to ask before you order.
How these numbers were made
Prices come from the shop pages linked on each model page. We take each model's lowest price, then compute the figures above from those 85 values. The table below is built from the same data and updates when prices do.
